One reason that I haven't been posting much recently is because I have been spending so much time with new toys equipment...Not only have I been experimenting with my new iPhone but since December I have received Photoshop Elements 8 and a new camera. I don't have any basic technical knowledge so it is a very long, slow learning curve...Slow enough that many of these cold, windy days have found me in my nice warm library experimenting at the computer rather than, say, cleaning the house...
One thing I wanted to try was to enhance a photo with a texture and this is my first attempt...
The original already had an amazing sky...
...I cropped the picture and layered on two free textures, FallinApart by SkeletalMess and WornLove from CoffeeShop...It may not look it but it took me hours to do this! I'm thinking I may prefer the original but it was fun!

this is lovely and it is a lot of fun.
Be careful with the borrowed textures...some of the owners seem to want credit every time you use them.
I went out with my camera and made a set of my own textures and that was fun. One of the best was a grubby paint splattered green garbage bin lid!
Scanned papers work very well too...
Happy days
I think you're right, Oliag. I prefer the original, too. I actually thought the second one was the original! Isn't it fun playing with the pictures! I could spend all day doing it, that is if I didn't go blind or have a raging headache from staring at the computer screen for hours on end! I'm still too cheap to buy Photoshop. Guess I'll have to break down and do it someday.
Wait a minute, which one did you say is the original? Now I'm confused.
Susan - The second one IS the original lol...so which one do you like best?
I like the textured one! I prefer the purplish sky. Textures and photoshop can be quite addicting!
It's a lot of fun, and I've found tricks at other places like PhotoScape and picnik. Definitely addictive.
I love the images, and I have a very similar one, twigs and the moon, purplish sky!
So beautiful!!! I love the first one, I think. You have some awesome photos on your blog. Glad I found you!! :)
it is fun to be artistic with PS and layers...i love the original too! it takes me a long time as well ...extra time i do not have...
I am so glad you are learning!
they are both beautiful images in their own way! you did a wonderful job for your first try -- my first try was total crap. i found that adding textures got a lot easier the more i practiced, and also that i got a more instinctive feel for what texture to pair with what photo. also i learned how to play with blending modes and opacity, and when to leave well enough alone. :)
oh, you did a fab job! i wish i knew how to do more of this. both amazing photos.
i love them both and there is a place for both of them. welcome to the world of textures!
Isn't texturing fun?! I actually do a lot of my own textures, but I am so, so a novice at it still. In fact, I rarely post mine yet, so I give you big kudos for putting your first one out there. I know what you mean, too, about how much time it can take, but it's a great skill to learn, and I find that the more I play with photography, the more I want to learn!
Thanks, as always, for being such an inspiration. xo
ooo...dreamy... I LOVE them both! ;o) I'm still a novice with the textures too... it's so much fun!
Oliag, I have to pass on this amazing site to you, Rita is brilliant and she post tutorials for PSE and Photoshop and all free you will have a blast and learn heaps.

I think your pics are both good
It is fun to photoshop but I like the challenge of trying to get the perfect photo. Nowhere near it yet but iPhoto is pretty good at tidying up messy shots without too much tampering. I think I prefer the original too!
This is a really nice texture over the photo. I have tried to play with textures a few times, but am never usually happy with what I create. I do like what you did though!
