Arcadia’s Autumn Mushrooms…

This is the season for mushrooms.  They pop up abundantly after every rain.  On my walks I meet mushroom gatherers who, hopefully, know the edible from the poisonous…no one wants to share the secret hiding places of the best to eat.  Every year I resolve to take a class on mushroom identification and then forget to sign up for one…and every year I try to take photos of those I find on walks around home.   I don’t own a macro lens so most of these shots are taken with my Canon G9 on macro setting.  I find beauty in these earthy things…and I’m pretty sure Sylvia Plath did too…

Sylvia Plath – Mushrooms

Our toes, our noses
Take hold on the loam,
Acquire the air.

Nobody sees us,
Stops us, betrays us;
The small grains make room.

Soft fists insist on
Heaving the needles,
The leafy bedding,

Even the paving.
Our hammers, our rams,
Earless and eyeless,

Perfectly voiceless,
Widen the crannies,
Shoulder through holes. We

Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking

Little or nothing.
So many of us!
So many of us!

We are shelves, we are
Tables, we are meek,
We are edible,

Nudgers and shovers
In spite of ourselves.
Our kind multiplies:

We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.

You did a fabulous job photographing these mushrooms! I wish my camera had such a good a macro setting. It balks at taking extreme close ups.

Too bad the mushrooms are not white truffles. I saw they were $3,400 a pound in Eataly this week! Black truffles were a mere $400 a pound. Yikes!

PS: I hope you do get a chance to visit Kent and W Cornwall...hurry though as the foliage is probably fading.

Oh what treasures. Purple! The second type always reminds me of Marilyn Monroe's skirt blowing up from the subway vent in 7 year itch. :)

The poem. So true about persistence, isn't it.

These are gorgeous. I came across a RED mushroom in the woods... AS I STEPPED ON IT!! *SIGH* It was such a pretty thing. And yes I know, prob. poisonous. But it would have made a pretty shot.

Thanks!

Such a variety! All beautiful, but I agree, the 4th one is exceptional - maybe because you can see the tree in the background. Really lovely.

Beautiful photos! I love the different shapes.

I'm thinking of the stories you could tell your grands about the little people who live in those mushroom shaped apartment buildings.

I agree - such beauty. In the words of the poem, in your words, and in your images. Thank you for sharing them here. I love the look of mushrooms and rarely get to see any growing wild. This was a real treat for me.

Love these--especially the purple one. Thank you also for Plath's poem. I did not know it.

Never mind the lens; it's the eye that sees. Yours does wonderfully.

I agree on that 4th one...ABFAB! I really like the one with the scabs, too. I think you're doin' just dandy with the macro setting...you don't need no stinkin' macro lens!
