As I was walking through the woods this song played through the ipod...the sound of the music, the smell of wet pine needles and leaves, the feel of crisp autumn winds all mingled into a spiritual moment...
My favorite version of this song is Leonard Cohen's most recent recording which can't be imbedded here...but I first heard it this way...
Hallelujah indeed...
Leonard Cohen's voice can bring me to tears...Although this song has been covered by many, the only one to come close to Cohen's version is k.d.lang...in my opinion...
...
Hallelujah
from The Essential Leonard Cohen
LYRICS
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

This is one of my all-time favorite songs. I listen to it a lot. Cohen's own versions are the best, but I have to admit that I love the way Jeff Buckley sings it, too.
Beautiful, beautiful photos, my friend.
xoxo Gigi
gorgeous gorgeous - i love that song. I'm also a fan of the jeff buckley version too.
I've never heard the song, but love the images...
Oliag, what a wonderful post! I love the pictures--oh, that lake!--and this is a great song. I will be back when I can play all of the versions of it without waking anyone up (the curse of insomnia). But I can still sing the words quietly, to myself. Hallelujah!
amazing images. lovely!
bravo to the great songs and those that sing them! The "walk" was full of sweet glimpses of the season.
So lovely and soothing, Oliag.
Good synchronicity for me this morning. I just had an email from my old friend in Greece whose wife introduced me to Cohen, and Jack himself reminds me of Cohen. Jack and his wife are artists who inspire me. So this is another layer of inspiration this morning. Thank you.
I hadn't heard Lang's version. Thanks for that too, it was gorgeous.
OK...after listening to Jeff Buckley's version again I will agree...it is great and is now my third favorite version:)
Beautiful song! I think much as I adore Leonard Cohen's version, I love Jeff Buckley's most. I also thought Jason Castro did a respectable job on American Idol couple seasons ago. Thanks for sharing such a special moment.
So. I listened. You're right, Cohen himself can move a person to tears. k.d. lang was wonderful also (did not know she performs barefoot). In an incredible twist of synchronicity, shoreacres left a link to an a cappella group's homespun, rehearsal version of this that was equally powerful. The group? The Accafellas. Their school?MSU....
I can't believe I've never heard this song! Where have I been? My son is a big Leonard Cohen fan, so I guess now I am also.
Lots of synchronicity going here in the comment section!
Oops, I also meant to say....gorgeous photos, as always!
Hey, DS talked about the Acafellas! I haven't heard them in a long time. My university. :)
I came back to tell you this knock-knock joke for your grandson. I used to tell the one he does, and also this one:
Knock-knock
Who's there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Knock-knock
Who's there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Knock-knock
Who's there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Knock-knock
Who's there?
Orange.
Orange who?
Orange you glad I didn't say banana again?
Hi, so great to catch up with you here--I've been peeking in too. ;o) One of my most favorite songs too...one can't help but be spirit-striken and raptured when hearing it. Jeff Buckley's renditions always shakes me. k.d lang's is beautiful as well...love her barefoot priestess-like appearance these days. Your images paired with this song makes for an incredibly humbling expeeience--thank you! :o)
Gosh, I love that song...and those pictures of autumn!
