From childhood on, The 4th of July meant family picnics and Memorial Day meant small town parades. I marched as a child with the Brownies and Girl Scouts…I watched as my children marched with the school bands and movement centers…Soon I will probably watch as my grandchildren march. This year we watched from the sidelines and caught lots of candy…
I hope the sun was shining on everyone’s parade this Memorial Day.

This parade looks so wonderful - what a way to celebrate Memorial Day!
relish this is a time honored tradition ..love the series of photos here, felt like I was in the chair next to you..except no candy !!
Ahh, I just love a small, hometown parade! What fun pics, Gail! Hope your weekend was happy. :)

Gail, your photos are great! These bring back a lot of special memories from childhood and from raising my own.
looks great. i especially love the giant dalmatian :)
Sweet. The best of hometown America. I grew up riding my bike in the parades too, across the bridge in our little town. I remember weaving red, white and blue crepe paper through my tire spokes.
We didn't go to our parade here Monday, though it is a big one and as many as a thousand people come. There are only about that many people who live in the town! There is a big tractor parade, with very old ones, it's fun. But we were too busy running around preparing for a week's power outage. Turns out it only lasted two days, thankfully: we got power back last night!
So glad to know that tradition still lives on in some parts of the country, such wonderful, heartwarming photos.
Great photos! Very beautiful & traditional!

So wonderful to see, Oliag! I've been away for a couple week--home in the US visiting my family... and was there in time for Memorial Day celebrations. Though we didn't get out to a parade we did picnic. ;o) Happy Days ((HUGS))
I love a small town parade and the way that everyone comes out to support the meaning of the day! You took wonderful shots and really captured the best icons.
Now I'm hoping Blogger will let my comment post! :)
I haven't been around the blog block in weeks. The school year ended and that's always hectic. Anyway, I just wanted to drop by and say hello. And to tell you that I missed you while I was away. I hope you have a wonderful summer.
What a delightful slice of Americana.
how fun....i love the marching band photo....the composition is just perfect !
Beautiful pictorial! I love the one of the hand slap with the 6 ft tall fire truck dalmation! Very cute. You're so good at capturing the best moments. :)
Love the photos - they seem to capture all that I think of as American as I am sitting here in the UK
i just love this post. and that truck made me smile... chicken scratch.

mmmmm. what a lovely kick-off to summer! loving these pics...since i'll e overseas this summer i'll miss all of the parades in our city...these pics are making me feel that i'm somehow part of the summer festivities :)
I haven't been to a parade here in years. The city has a big Veteran's Day parade, but I've had to work on that day for the past 10 years. I think it's a holiday at this job...yahoo, maybe I will attend the parade this year.
Love your pictures. Hope your summer is going well.
You captured exactly what I love about New England life in these photos! Some things don't change, and small-town parades are just one of the sweet things that I treasure. Plus, I love catching the candy, too!
Hope you are well, my friend. Thanks for your sweet comment today over at my place. You were one of the people I was thinking of as I wrote about my photography addiction. I knew you'd understand!!! :)
