The Sixth of January
The cat sits on the back of the sofa looking
out the window through the softly falling snow
at the last bit of gray light.I can't say the sun is going down.
We haven't seen the sun for two months.
Who cares?I am sitting in the blue chair listening to this stillness.
The only sound: the occasional gurgle of tea
coming out of the pot and into the cup.How can this be?
Such calm, such peace, such solitude
in this world of woe."The Sixth of January," by David Budbill, from Moment to Moment: Poems of a Mountain Recluse (Copper Canyon Press).
I love it when I find a poem that I wish I had written ...one that describes exactly what I would like to say...of course my chair isn't blue but gold...and the sun is shining thru the window...but still...
I found this and many other of my favorite poems at The Writer's Almanac...What I am not sure of is if I need permission to put a found poem here...

yes the poems i find that thrill me are real gifts...i like this one as i like the thought of silence and calm....your cat knows this all to well!
Love that...the picture and the poem. It reminds me of how the song fit my picture yesterday!
Ahhh, to be able to curl up in a sunny spot and sleep the day away without a care in the world other than wondering if someone would be filling your bowl soon. I'm not sure cats even wonder...I think they just assume. :)
Lovely poem and picture, O!
i love that poem too - a beautiful find. and i think you're good about the blogging as you did all the attributes and links.
I think you are good with using this poem. If you hadn't I would never have heard of it, or the author or found the site. So it is all good.
Love the cat's pose!
That's a great find... lovely picture too! Have a great day!
He captured a winter day so well, didn't he?
Oh it's a wonderful poem. I agree with Violetski that we wouldn't have read it if you hadn't posted it here. I think citing it as you did is perfect, I would do the same.
Kitty is so cuddly cozy and sweet there in the warm light through the window.
my daughter and i like to read poems together and we read this yesterday and she drew a picture of a cat by the window... and now seeing this here :)
Love the poem where he says, "who cares". That's rather how I have felt since a turned 50 a few years ago.
Lovely poem and photo.

Yes, I think citing the poem the way you did is fine. And it is a beautiful poem (funny, I've been thinking about solitude today). As for the cat--perfect!!
Thank you.
Oh, I love this. What a wonderful poem. And the photo is great, too.
