I had never heard of
them when I was taken by surprise one early spring day more than 30 years ago by a yard which was carpeted in blue...The first three pictures are of that yard...

...when I see them for the first time each spring they take my breath away...

...Photos don't do the deep blue or the sheer number of them justice...

...They blossom just about the same time as crocus yet they don't seem as popular or well known as crocus and I don't know why...Eventually I planted some in my own yard ... the following pictures are of those I planted ...

...The plant is named for the Greek word for snow,chion...and glory,doxa...it is commonly known as
Glory-in-the-Snow...

...Not only do they spread easily but they are so hardy they keep coming up through stones on the walkway and by the gravel driveway...

...The only plants I seem to be able to grow are like this...hardy, tenacious, unstoppable!

I would be happy to have this flower in my yard as well. Hardy is such a great characteristic.
so sweet
I wouldn't mind these in my yard either, they are beautiful!
Hi Oliag,
How beautiful they are and so well matched to the blue house. there is something so fresh and healing about blue flowers.
We have those, too, down on our terrace. I wasn't sure exactly what they were called. Yours are just beautiful!
Those are beautiful! A friend was just talking about them--they cover her neighbor's lawn & neither of us knew what they were. Now, thanks to you, I do & can tell her. Yippee! "Hardy, tenacious and unstoppable." What more could one ask of a plant?
Glory in the Snow...guess that is why I've never seen this flower before...we have so little snow. They are gloriously blue and beautiful.
I just saw these in someone's yard the other day and just assumed they were violets, even though it's too early for them. They looked just like a carpet of deep blue. Your pictures are lovely.
Thank you! I see them every year too. Then the other day I was driving onto our university campus and saw some under a tree, just like one of your photos. I got out and snapped a picture. But I didn't know their name or how to find out. So yay! They are just so sweet, at a distance and close up, the way you caught them.
P.S. I am still posting. Blogger has a problem and my new posts are not being feed to other bloggers' bloglists so it appears as if I am stuck with Florence!
I am feeling very lonely today!
