Compost, Soil, Earth...

In honor of the theme "Earth", I went out to check on our compost pile...

...We have composted our organic waste for years according to the three-bin / two-turn method I drew from Thalassa Cruso's book "Making Vegetables Grow" published in 1975...
...She was quite a character and I remember seeing her appear on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson...

.......Mr. O. built the three bins out of fencing and it still exists although covered in vines......The new organic waste goes in the first bin...which is later turned into the second bin... then the third...then it is finished compost...

...The finished compost is ready for spreading in the garden...it is rich and brown...

...and full of earthworms...

Omigosh, I had completely forgotten about Thalassa Cruso! I remember her making the rounds of the talk shows like Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas. She must have made an impression, because I've composted for all that time. I just didn't remember who inspired it. Of course, my mother and grandparents and my in-laws all composted, they just didn't call it that. :)

beautiful dark soil matter. I bet your garden loves that.

I guess one would have to garden to compost. I'm a bit of a brown thumb. Happy Earth Day.

I've tried but not seriously to compost. I remember Thalassa being on TV.
