Stalking the Ardea Herodias...

...or Great Blue Heron...

Although I take just about the same route every time I take a walk in my neighborhood, there always seems to be something different to take pictures of...today a Great Blue Heron was wading in a shallow part of a nearby pond. I waited quite awhile to see if I could capture him flying but he was the more patient observer...

My camera isn't capable of much in the way of telephoto pictures...but I was fairly pleased. On the other hand I wasn't pleased at how muddy my dog managed to get while I was busy taking pictures...

Ahhh such are the costs involved in getting the good shots.
He's a big heron - we have smaller versions!
This is a big pond...in the suburbs or country?

Hehe! That will teach you to pay more attention to the herons than your dog!

I think he was more interested in "strutting his stuff" for you. What a huge, gorgeous bird! And the dog had fun, too ;)

nice capture, the price we pay, or at least your dog does. : )

Delwyn - This is probably the biggest bird we have locally...My local pond is actually rather small - to walk around it is probably a little more than a mile...in the country part of suburbia if there is such a thing!

Tracey - This dog usually stays away from the water! I bet she was surprised it got muddy too...

ds - He did seem to be turning so that I could see both sides...usually they fly away..especially when they hear the dog...

Brian - Thanks for visiting!...Sometimes I do yearn for a big camera with a telephoto lens...but then I wonder if I would really carry it around...

Come on, now! What's a little mud when you captured such great shots! Very nice!

I have some nice pics of a heron on Lake Logan near where we hike in S.E. Ohio.

I saw my first Great Blue on my vacation to Florida. We walked onto the Bradenton Beach pier and there were three or four pelicans and one Great Blue. He didn't look as nice as the ones in your photos. In fact, he looked rather rag tag. I thought all the birds on the pier looked rough. Maybe I was projecting too much.

Would you believe I actually see herons and egrets here in Brooklyn? I live near a salt marsh and they are often there in the morning.
They are so majestic!
