Recently my grandchildren have been enjoying the book Angelina at the Fair that was given to their Aunt E in 1986. It is inscribed “Happy 4th Birthday E! We’ll be going to the fair soon – Just like Angelina!”. The story concerns an adventurous mouse who takes a younger cousin to a fair where they go on a ferris wheel, a roller coaster, and a Haunted House before the little cousin gets lost.
Maybe because of this story, when he heard that we were going to the North Stonington Fair Mr J immediately was interested in riding the ferris wheel.
It was difficult sitting through dinner…
The animals were a little more fun…
Dels Frozen Lemonade was enjoyed…
Ribbons were earned for being good farmers…
That ferris wheel was always within sight…
And finally we were there…
He wasn’t frightened at all…
We could see Mom and Miss E waving from the train…
Unlike her brother, Miss E really didn’t like the rides…
Mr O got some great shots of us on the roller coaster…
I like roller coasters and now have someone who will go on them with me…
Miss E did not want any help catching this fish…
Before we left the fair Mr J got to go on a pony ride…
I have been going to county fairs since I was in a 4H club showing my rabbit. It was nice to return with grandchildren and to remember how hot, dusty, and fun it had been.

I was already getting excited about our county fair, and now I am like your grandson in that top photo, impatient! (So cute.)
I see what you mean about your granddaughter's hair, and yours, in the humidity. If my hair were like either of yours, I'd love that humidity, maybe.
I love these fairs. We start with the animals, usually the chickens, because Don likes to see all the breeds. Me too. I love the horses, and seeing the young people clean and groom them. I love elephant ears and French Fries. I love all of it.
So cool that you have a roller coaster buddy! How adorable you both look. :)
I loved the County Fair as a kid!Seeing all the animals--cows, sheep, even rabbits (loved the rabbits)was a treat. Tractor pulls, Grange booths. The "fishing." Our mom wouldn't let us on the Midway where the Ferris wheel was, so we contented ourselves with watching the sulkie races, betting pennies and nickels with our grandmother. Thanks for the memories.
I don't know who is having more fun on that roller coaster--Mr J or you!!
I have a passion for beautifully illustrated childrens books that started in my own childhood and was fueled by running a childrens library myself for several years. Choosing all the new books every year was a wonderful job!
This one looks looks beautiful!
The fair, especially seen with children, is a great way to tap into our own "inner child"...love the shot of the ferris wheel too!
What fun! That is what my kids are doing today...going to the fair with their grandparents. Grandparents get all the fun ;0)
What a fun day! I remember my daughter liking Angelina books when she was a child. You made some wonderful memories for the grands!
When I was a child I always looked forward to going to Coney Island with my Dad and going on the rides and then having a hot dog at Nathans. Fabulous summer memories.
PS: Every time I open your blog I want a piece of the cake in the header :)
Oh, frame that roller coaster picture! It is simply wonderful. The very essence of summer fun!!
All the fun of the fair... So much FUN! Just love seeing everyone's expressions... your's too! ;o) Thanks for taking us along.. Happy Day ((HUGS))
love that shot of the ferris wheel, and you seem to be having so much fun on the roller coaster.
OH wow you captured the feel and action just perfectly!!
thanks for taking me along on your trip...the ferris wheel shot steals my heart.
hope you enjoy more fun things this summer.
one love.
love love the ferris wheel!
xo
My grands are counting the days until our county fair begins next week. The boys love the ferris wheel and so do I. My husband and oldest son and daughter never liked riding the rides, but I would always ride them with Josh. We were both thrill-seekers.
I was late in participating as a child. It wasn't until I was in my teens that I joined 4-H and then it was mostly so I could go to the fair and hang out with cute boys. Yep, I was boy crazy!
You got some great pictures, O!
The illustration of the ferris wheel in the book looks like the ones I remember as a child ... such a fun time to enjoy.
Hi Oliag, Thanks for stopping by and letting me know of your upcoming trip to Maine. You must be excited because it's so close! Yes, by all means if you can get a chance to stop by I would love to meet you in person! And I love the shot you captured of that ferris wheel, haven't been on one of those for years. I also enjoyed your beach pictures a few posts back! ~Lili

I love county fairs so, so much! They are one of the reasons I adore August and September. I could go to one every week. I used to love roller coasters, but the older I get the less I can handle them. They make me feel sick now. Bummer! I still love the ferris wheel, though, and your photos capture exactly the reason why. What a fun time you all had! xoxo Gigi
Oh, I do love a good fair and carny. Your Popcorn and Ferris wheel (sorta. Are those rides still called Ferris Wheels?)images make me happy. Very happy. You could sell those, my friend. They are wonderful.
I used to read that book to my daughter. we both loved it. :) and i was in the 4-H club too, but with horses... :) your grandchildren are so adorable, gail, and looks like you all had a marvelous time!
